headstone cleaning

A memorial to a loved one is intended as a lasting tribute, but in order to maintain its good appearance and stability, it does require regular care and attention. Over the years, a headstone may be impacted by weather erosion, sun, rain and wind all taking their toll. Our professional gravestone cleaning is comprehensive and thorough and can have a huge impact on the on-going appearance of a memorial. We offer a range headstone cleaning services to include all types of memorials and the condition they are in.

Our specialised headstone cleaning service is dedicated to restoring existing memorials, whether they have stood for years or several decades in cemeteries and churchyards. With experience cleaning headstones that date back to the 1940s, we aim to return each memorial as closely as possible to its original condition. It is important to note that each headstone responds uniquely to weathering, depending on its specific location within the burial ground, and while every effort is made, a pristine result cannot always be guaranteed.

Prior to undertaking any cleaning work, we provide a comprehensive assessment to ensure the headstone’s suitability for cleaning and to determine the anticipated results.

Annual Grave Maintenance

Following the installation of a new headstone or following on of our professional Headstone Cleans. We provide a service to maintain headstone’s frequently to ensure their appearance is kept in the best possible condition. Whilst many families and friends attend and clean their own memorials, this will often depend on their ability to visit regularly and distance from the Cemetery or Churchyard can make this difficult.

In addition, new Health and Safety regulations pertaining to memorials make it necessary to always ensure their stability to avoid possible accidents and injury. Local and Church Authorities are even empowered to remove such memorials that are, in their opinion, in a poor state of repair and potentially dangerous.

The authorities are required to notify memorial owners and give them notice to correct any stability defects but quite often owners may be difficult to trace as time goes by.

In view of this, here at Head & Wheble have instigated a memorial maintenance service as a follow on from our memorial manufacturing division. The aim is to ensure your memorial is kept as clean and tidy as possible and to supply a report on its structural condition where this is felt to be appropriate.

Remember, good upkeep of your memorial will help keep your special tribute in good condition and extend its life.

We recommend two cleans per year and we have a range of different contract terms from renewing annually to 5-year and 10-year fixed terms to save you the hassle of renewing each year. We offer longer contract terms on application.

We are also able to create a bespoke tailored maintenance service for you which includes, flower planting and more than 2 cleans per year.

The cost of our annual maintenance packages starts at £78.00 per year providing two cleans per year and depends on the type of headstone.

Restoration

Restoring a memorial is often more than a simple cleaning—it is a process that can bring new life to an important tribute and safeguard it for future generations. While sometimes a careful maintenance clean is all that is required to make a significant difference, many memorials benefit from more comprehensive restoration efforts to return them to their original condition when they were first installed. Below are some of the key restoration services we offer, each designed to address specific issues and enhance both the appearance and integrity of the memorial. We handle each headstone with care and attention visiting the burial ground to carry out a full assessment to highlight the works required. Everything is fully set out and explained in detail with quotes provided and, in many cases, various quotes setting out different options available.
Re-lettering
Over time, inscriptions on a memorial can become faded or worn due to exposure to the elements. Re-lettering involves expertly recutting or repainting the original text so that names, dates, and dedications are once again crisp, legible, and respectful of the original design. This can often be done on-site where the memorial is situated. In certain cases, the headstone may require removing to our workshop for more extensive works to be performed under workshop conditions. There are hundreds of different letterings styles and finishes old and new and our team are trained to manage expertly any lettering condition and method.
Replacement of Flower Container(s)
Many memorials include flower containers as part of their design, offering a place for flowers. If these containers become damaged or lost, we can replace them with new, matching containers to maintain the memorial’s appearance and provide a welcoming spot for fresh or artificial flowers. We can arrange fresh or artificial flowers during the replacement of the container.

Re-level (Due to subsidence)

Shifting ground or settling soil can cause memorials to tilt, lean, or become uneven. Our team carefully re-levels the memorial, ensuring it stands straight and stable. This improves both the safety and the aesthetics of the site, preventing further damage caused by uneven foundations removing excess stress on certain joints. A simple re-level may not be sufficient to ensuring the longevity of the headstone structure. We may need to supply new foundations and re-dowel joints with metal fixings to ensure the headstone’s safety. These works are usually carried out on-site to avoid incurring costs for a removal and re-fix.
Securing Headstone Components
Memorials often feature various components— including: the headstone itself, the base, foot posts, head posts, and kerb-sets. These ‘joints’ can become loose or detached over time. We re-fix these joints with durable methods, restoring the structure’s integrity and ensuring that every part is securely in place.
Broken Chipping Bed or Replenishment of Chippings
The chipping bed—the decorative stone or pebble surface often found at the base of a memorial underneath chippings or material—can become broken or depleted over time. We repair damaged beds and replenish chippings, restoring the memorial’s finish and helping to protect the base from wear and weathering. This issue is commonly found with traditional headstone with a kerb-set surround.
BRAMM Guarantee
Every stage of our restoration process is carried out with respect for the memorial’s significance and history, ensuring its dignity is preserved and those commemorated are honoured. As a BRAMM-registered and accredited organisation, we follow stringent guidelines and adhere to all fixing regulations. With the continued advancement of headstone fixing standards, any structural work we undertake on a memorial is upgraded to meet current requirements, maintaining long-term stability and minimising potential damage from environmental exposure.

History of the New Forest Airfields and the FONFA War Memorial:

The New Forest played a crucial role during the Second World War as a base for Allied air operations, with numerous airfields supporting missions such as D-Day. To honour the diverse squadrons, airmen, and ground crew who served and sacrificed, the Friends of the New Forest Airfields (FONFA) established the War Memorial—a lasting tribute conceived through community support and careful planning. The memorial, featuring meaningful inscriptions and symbolic imagery, serves as a place of remembrance and reflection for all, its dignity maintained through ongoing restoration by Head & Wheble, ensuring the legacy and stories of those connected to the New Forest airfields endure for future generations. For more information, visit the Friends of the New Forest Airfields website here fonfa.co.uk

In September 2023, we were engaged by the board of trustees to assist in the restoration of their World War II memorial in anticipation of the D-Day 80 commemoration. Through extensive planning and careful consideration, we determined the most effective approach for the project, yielding results that fully met expectations. A number of specialist cleaning techniques were used to restore this memorial back to its original appearance taking our specialist cleaning team 2 days to complete.

Charles Rolls Heritage Trust

We were honoured to be commissioned for the cleaning and restoration of the memorial dedicated to the Honourable Charles Stewart Rolls, the pioneering aviator whose legacy is marked by both innovation and courage. Recognising the historic importance of this site, our team undertook the project with the utmost care and respect, employing specialist techniques to preserve the memorial’s dignity and ensure its inscriptions and features remain a fitting tribute. Through thoughtful planning and attention to detail, we restored this monument so that it continues to commemorate Rolls’s remarkable achievements and the enduring memory of Britain’s aviation heritage.

History
The Honourable Charles Stewart Rolls was an accomplished cyclist, a leading pioneer in motoring, motor racing, ballooning and flying. On 2nd June 1910 Rolls made a return flight across the channel without landing and proved that Britain was no longer an island and therefore vulnerable to airborne attack. The first International Aviation Meeting in Great Britain was part of the Centenary celebrations of Bournemouth in 1910 at which the tail of his aircraft collapsed during a spot landing contest on 12th July. Rolls was the first Briton to die in a powered aircraft accident.
Following his death in 1910, statues were raised for Charles Rolls at his hometown of Monmouth and at Dover from where he made his double crossing of the Channel. It was not until July 1978 that a memorial plaque was unveiled in the private grounds of St Peter’s School near the spot of the fatal crash. In 2010 Rolls-Royce plc (the aero engine company) refurbished the original and added a base of polished granite as below. Today the plaque is hidden from public view by housing, but access is granted for the annual commemoration.
